Resting instead of Striving

I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard.  Are you so foolish?  After beginning with the Spirit are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? – Galatians 3:2-3

In June, I preached a series on “The Power to Possess” and shared several keys that we as believers can embrace to walk in and experience the blessings and promises of God.  The first and most important key, I believe, is to stop striving in our OWN EFFORT to do what only God can do and instead, move from works to faith!  When we STRIVE in our own effort to attain the blessings and promises of God, we end up living by the flesh, the law, our works and our performance.  However, the blessings and promises of God don’t come to us when we try to make them happen in our own strength.  Instead, they are made available to us through the finished work of the cross (what Jesus has done) and are accessible as we believe by faith.  Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us that we are saved by faith – not by works or anything that we have done.

When we move from works to faith, we find ourselves in a position of spiritual REST and PEACE.  Spiritual rest (the opposite of striving) is a place of power because it is a place where we can possess the promises of God!  Psalm 46:10 says, Cease striving and know that I am God.” (NASB)  When we stop striving and are at rest, we may have a problem but we are trusting God for the solution… we may be going through a situation but experience His peace and joy… we labor, but it is a labor that is dependent on God and produces much fruit.  Resting in Him allows us to inherit His promises and walk in the destiny He has for our lives!

What We Believe

About the Bible

The Bible is the inspired word of God and therefore our final authority for faith and Christian living.

About Our World

That the universe is the purposeful creation of a personal, loving, almighty God.  That all human beings are made in the image of the Creator and are of infinite worth.  That our world is under the sway of sin as a result of human rebellion against God, so that suffering, death and separation from God are the experience of humankind.  That without the intervention of God’s grace, this will be the eternal state of all persons.

About God

That God is infinite and the Creator of all things, who exists eternally in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These three (the Trinity) are one in essence but distinct in person.  God the Father is the first person of the Trinity and the source of all that God is and does.  He is the Sovereign of all.

About Jesus Christ

That Jesus Christ is the incarnate Son of God, and through His virgin birth, sinless life, sacrificial death on the Cross, and glorious resurrection and ascension, graciously offers new life to all who receive Him as Lord by faith.   He will return to this world, bring and end to history as we know it, inaugurate the final judgment, and welcome believers into His eternal kingdom.

About the Holy Spirit

That the Holy Spirit, indwelling believers, gives them a desire and an ability to follow biblical standards of conduct in their personal lives and society.

About the Christian Life

That the follower of Christ is to live out his faith in the community of believers demonstrating a life of worship, communion, prayer and service to others.  That he should love God with his entire heart, soul, mind and strength, and reflect that devotion in both the church and society.

Where we get the name Seibert

Evangelical Congregational Church

Seibert:  Named for John Seybert (1791-1860), an early leader in our denomination who was passionate about telling others of the life-changing power of Jesus Christ.

Evangelical:  Refers to our core belief that people can experience a restored relationship with God only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Congregational:  Though part of a world-wide denomination of churches and ministries, each church makes most of its own decisions.
